How to read gold options positioning
Options open interest shows where large participants have paid for protection or upside. Market makers on the other side of those contracts hedge with the underlying, and that hedging flow can slow or accelerate price near heavily traded strikes.
Put/call ratio. Readings near 0.5 mean calls dominate. Readings above 0.9 show defensive hedging. An extreme in either direction is context for positioning, not a timing signal.
Call wall and put wall. The largest call strike above price and the largest put strike below price in the nearest expiries. They frame the zone where dealer hedging is most active. A clean break with displacement through a wall often shifts those hedges and extends the move.
Max pain and IV30. Max pain is the strike with the smallest payout to holders into expiry. IV30 measures the volatility the options market prices for the next month and helps size stops relative to expected range.
Combine these levels with market structure and liquidity, the weekly COT positioning and retail sentiment. Size every idea with the position size calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold put/call ratio?
The number of open put contracts divided by open call contracts on gold options. A reading above 1 shows more downside protection than upside exposure. A reading near 0.5 shows calls dominate open interest.
Why use GLD options for gold sentiment?
SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) carries one of the deepest listed options markets tied to gold. Its chain is published by CBOE with open interest by strike, which makes institutional hedging visible in a way spot forex data cannot.
What is a call wall in gold?
The strike above price holding the largest call open interest in the nearest expiries. Dealers who sold those calls often hedge by selling into strength near that level, so it can act as a ceiling while open interest stays concentrated.
What is a put wall in gold?
The strike below price holding the largest put open interest in the nearest expiries. Dealer hedging around that strike can slow declines, so it is read as an options derived support reference.
How are GLD strikes converted to XAUUSD prices?
Each GLD strike is multiplied by the current ratio between XAUUSD spot and the GLD share price. The ratio drifts slowly because of the fund expense ratio, so the mapped levels are close approximations, not exact spot prices.
What is max pain?
The strike where option holders across the near expiries would collect the least intrinsic value at expiry. Price sometimes gravitates toward it into expiration, though it is a tendency, not a target.
What does IV30 tell a gold trader?
IV30 is the market implied annualised volatility for the next 30 days. Rising IV30 means the options market is paying more for protection, which usually comes with wider daily ranges in XAUUSD.
Can I trade the call or put wall alone?
No. Options levels are context. Execution still needs market structure, a liquidity interaction, displacement and defined invalidation on the chart.
How often does the page update?
Open interest settles once per trading session. The page reads the CBOE delayed chain at most once per hour and keeps the last good reading during outages or weekends.
