Mildly bearish

The crowd leans long. Recent swing lows and equal lows are potential sell side liquidity (SSL) references. Actual stops are not reported.

Context only. Never an entry trigger.

Trapped traders: who is underwater

Average retail entry versus live spot. A negative average P/L does not establish individual account margin, stop locations or the next price destination.

Awaiting live spot price. Enter a test price above.

Averages describe open positions only. Positioning is not order placement. Confirm stop clusters on structure.

Estimated liquidity & margin scenarios

How to read sentiment the institutional way

  1. Locate the pool. A crowded long side places stops under swing lows (SSL). A crowded short side places them above swing highs (BSL).
  2. Wait for the raid. Price wicks through the pool and closes back inside. That is a liquidity sweep, not a breakout.
  3. Require displacement. An impulsive body move away from the sweep, ideally leaving a Fair Value Gap.
  4. Confirm structure. A body close MSS or BOS on M15 aligned with H1 and H4 context before any entry.

Gold trends hard. Retail can stay 70% short for weeks during a rally. Read the full framework in Gold Retail Sentiment and Contrarian Liquidity.

Frequently asked questions

What is gold retail sentiment?

The share of retail trading accounts holding long or short positions on XAUUSD. It is sometimes called the Speculative Sentiment Index (SSI).

Where does this data come from?

The live layer is the Myfxbook community outlook for XAUUSD, an aggregate of real accounts connected to Myfxbook. It is a sample of retail traders, not the whole market. The weekly layer is the official CFTC Non Reportable category for COMEX gold futures.

Why is retail sentiment read as a contrarian signal?

Retail traders tend to fade strong trends. When the crowd is heavily on one side, its stop losses tend to cluster beyond nearby swing points, forming a liquidity pool that larger participants can use to fill size.

Does the long and short ratio show exactly where stops sit?

No. The ratio shows positioning, not order placement. Stop clusters are inferred from structure: equal highs, equal lows and recent swing points. Confirm them on the chart.

What does trapped or underwater mean?

A side is underwater when spot is beyond its average entry against it. Underwater traders are more likely to close under pressure, which adds fuel when price runs through their stops.

Can I enter a trade because 70% of traders are long?

No. An extreme reading can persist for days or weeks in a strong gold trend. Treat it as context. Execution still requires a liquidity sweep, displacement and a structural confirmation.

Is CFTC Non Reportable data the same as retail forex sentiment?

No. It covers COMEX futures accounts below reporting thresholds, reported weekly with a three day lag. It is an official proxy for small speculators, not a count of retail spot accounts.

How often does the page update?

During market hours a new snapshot is captured when the stored one is older than 30 minutes and the page is requested. During the weekend the last stored snapshot is shown. The CFTC layer refreshes every Friday for the prior Tuesday.
