How to trade
XAUUSD in the UK
London is the centre of the physical gold market. Understand FCA rules, choose between spread bets and CFDs, and size risk in sterling before you trade.
Can you trade XAUUSD in the UK?
Yes. UK residents can trade spot gold through FCA-authorised providers, most commonly via spread bets or CFDs. The product choice changes your tax treatment, and the provider's legal entity decides your protections. Check both before the chart.
What the FCA framework means for gold traders
FCA rules for retail CFDs and spread bets cap leverage on gold at 20:1 (5% initial margin). Providers must close positions when equity falls to 50% of required margin, offer negative balance protection, and publish the percentage of retail accounts that lose money.
These protections apply to retail clients of FCA-authorised firms. Opting up to professional status, or opening with an offshore entity of the same brand, can remove them.
Authorisation is entity-specific. Match the firm reference number on the FCA Register to the legal entity named in your client agreement.
Spread betting vs CFDs: same market, different tax
Spread betting
You stake an amount in sterling per point of movement. Under current HMRC treatment, gains are generally outside Capital Gains Tax for most individuals, and losses are generally not deductible.
Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and can change.
CFDs
You trade a contract sized in ounces, usually settled in USD or converted to GBP. Gains are generally subject to CGT, and losses can usually be offset against other gains.
Some traders prefer CFDs for loss relief and broker-standard lot sizing.
Gold ETCs & bullion
Exchange-traded commodities on the London Stock Exchange or allocated bullion give unleveraged exposure. Certain UK gold coins are CGT-exempt as legal tender.
Not a tool for copying intraday trade levels.
| Feature | Spread bet | CFD |

London sets the world's gold benchmark
The London over-the-counter market, priced Loco London in USD per troy ounce, is the largest venue for physical gold. Spot XAUUSD quotes from UK providers derive from this wholesale liquidity.
The LBMA Gold Price is set by electronic auctions twice daily, at 10:30 and 15:00 London time. Central banks, refiners and funds use it for pricing and settlement.
How we read London
- The London open often sweeps Asian session highs or lows before direction is set.
- Auction times are context for liquidity, not entry triggers.
- A wick through a level is a liquidity interaction; a body close with displacement is structure.
- Quote currency is USD: GBP/USD moves change your sterling P&L on CFDs.
Size your gold risk in sterling
Gold is quoted in dollars, but your account and your loss budget are in pounds. Start from the amount you accept losing and a structural stop, then derive the stake.
UK gold risk calculator (GBP)
A £10.00 stake loses about £100.00 if gold moves $10 against you.
Spread bet point definitions differ by provider: some quote per $1, others per $0.10. Confirm the point value on your platform. Excludes spread, overnight financing, slippage and gaps. FCA retail leverage on gold is capped at 20:1; margin is collateral, not your loss limit.
Margin is not your loss budget
At 20:1, a 1 oz position at $4,000 needs about $200 margin. That margin is collateral. Gaps around CPI, NFP or FOMC can move price beyond your stop. Size from invalidation, not from the maximum position your account allows.

- Spot gold week
- Trades from Sunday evening to Friday evening UK time, with a short daily break around 22:00 to 23:00 UK time. Provider hours vary.
- London open
- 08:00 UK time. Liquidity rises sharply and Asian ranges are frequently tested.
- London and New York overlap
- Roughly 13:00 to 17:00 UK time. US CPI and NFP are commonly released at 13:30 UK time. UK and US clocks change on different dates, which shifts the overlap for a few weeks each year.
An execution checklist, not a clock-based entry
- Establish H4 and H1 structure before an M15 execution idea.
- Identify external or session liquidity and wait for interaction.
- Require displacement and a body-confirmed structure break.
- Check the economic calendar for 13:30 UK releases.
- Stand aside if event risk, unclear structure or sizing invalidates the trade.
A prop firm is not an FCA account
Many gold evaluations accept UK residents, but most run on simulated accounts and the firm is usually not an FCA-authorised broker. Payouts are contractual, not protected by the FSCS.

UK gold trading: common questions
Can you trade XAUUSD in the UK?
Yes. UK residents commonly access XAUUSD through FCA-authorised providers via spread bets or CFDs, and can also access exchange-listed gold futures or gold ETPs through suitable accounts. Check the provider on the FCA Register before funding.
Is gold spread betting tax free in the UK?
Under current HMRC treatment, spread betting gains are generally outside Capital Gains Tax for most individuals, and spread betting losses are generally not allowable. Treatment depends on individual circumstances and can change. This is not tax advice; consult a qualified adviser.
Spread betting or CFDs for gold?
Both are leveraged derivatives with similar market exposure. Spread bets are staked in GBP per point and are generally outside CGT for individuals. CFD gains are generally subject to CGT, and losses can be offset against gains. Some traders prefer CFDs for loss relief or direct ounce sizing.
What is the maximum leverage on gold in the UK?
For retail clients, FCA rules cap leverage on gold CFDs and spread bets at 20:1, a 5% initial margin. Professional clients can receive higher leverage but lose some retail protections, including the leverage cap.
What is the LBMA Gold Price?
The LBMA Gold Price is the London benchmark set by electronic auctions at 10:30 and 15:00 London time. It is used for pricing and settlement. It is not a trading signal, but liquidity can concentrate around the auctions.
What time is best to trade gold in the UK?
London opens at 08:00 UK time and the London and New York overlap typically runs from about 13:00 to 17:00 UK time. Liquidity and volatility usually peak during the overlap. US releases such as CPI and NFP commonly land at 13:30 UK time.
Am I protected by the FSCS when trading gold?
FSCS protection may apply to eligible claims if an authorised firm fails, up to applicable limits for investments. It does not cover trading losses. Offshore entities of the same brand may not be covered; verify the contracting entity.
Can UK traders use a gold prop firm?
Many evaluations accept UK residents, but most are simulated accounts and are not FCA-authorised brokers. A funded-account label is not regulatory protection. Read drawdown, payout and news rules before paying any fee.
